Stissing House, Pine Planes NY, USA

A Romantic Dinner Experience in an 18th-Century Tavern

Clare de Boer, who won accolades at King, branced out with Stissing House, Stissing House is one of the oldest taverns in America. It has played host to feasts for generations. She loved the idea of restoring the building, which dates to 1782, to return to its roots as a tavern serving simple, homey food. The decorations are rustic and minimal — the original plank flooring and roof beams remain.

Celebrate with an intimate group downstairs in the Punchbowl or on the second floor in the Upstairs Bar. Throw a long-table dinner in the oldest Ballroom in America or feast by candlelight in our beamed Barn.

Her menu centers on dishes cooked over a wood fire, like braised duck served with cornbread enriched with duck fat, game pies, and pork shoulder simmered overnight with cider and celeriac.

The food at this American restaurant is excellent. Details like the dozens of Ebenezer Scrooge-esque candlesticks on every flat surface and multiple fireplaces will make you slow down and remember that you’re not in the Big City anymore. It’s a great place to bring a date, or pretend you’re yearning for the freedom to marry for love in a romance novel.
